Hebrews Chapter 6

Remember that in previous chapters we discover the big problem is Hebrews is the Sin of Unbelief

[Heb 3:12] “Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God.”

[Heb 3:18-19] “And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.”

and we also learn that believers enter a “rest” only found in faith, and not in the law.

[Heb 4:3] “For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,”

Today we will see a promise from God. An Oath.

We will see this Promise is our Anchor for our soul. It can’t be broken.

VS 1 comes off the hinges of chapter 5 when they were told Solid food is for the mature Christian, and milk for the immature. I said solid food was not doing stuff, but about understanding good sound doctrine about Jesus, and we see it here.

Hebrews 6 – The Peril of Falling Away

[Hebrews 6:1] 6 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,

The author has been addressing the sin of unbelief. And the readers are Jews all jacked up on works, dead works, with a little dab of Jesus.

Here are some of those dead works the author addresses

[Hebrews 6:2] 2 of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.

Resurrection. In Acts, the Pharisees are arguing if there really was a resurrection. If Jesus was not resurrected you won’t be either.

We’re getting ready to see the word “tasted” good news which does not mean they were saved. Consistent with the rest of Hebrews it means the HEARD the good news, but didn’t fully eat the meal (believe).

Remember [Heb 4:2] said “but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.

[Hebrews 6:3-6] 3 And this we will do, if God permits. 4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Keywords: Enlightened. Tasted. Partakers. They HEARD this great news just like you all have.

Q: Why is it impossible to renew them again to repentance (change of mind)?

A: You’ve heard the gospel. If you reject Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and grab on to another source for salvation what happens to you? To reject Christ is to put him back on the cross.

The toughest verse to understand may just be “made partakers of the Holy Spirit”. I think this is explained in the next verse as they “shared the powers of the age to come”

Think about who they are and where they live (Jerusalem). Did they hear the apostle’s teachings? YES. Did they see the apostle’s healings? Some even saw Jesus’ miracles. Thus they have been made partakers like all the others alive and in that city.

[Hebrews 6:7] 7 For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;

So the first type of ground doesn’t just taste the rain, it drinks it in and brings vegetation. This resembles Jesus’ parable about the seed and the sower in Mathew 13, some fell on good soil

And there’s another type…

[Hebrews 6:8] 8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.

Those verses are commonly cited as proof of losing salvation.

[Hebrews 6:9] 9 But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.

Beloved are Christians. The author is saying even though I am writing this harsh stuff, concerning you I am convinced of better things.

[Hebrews 6:10-12] 10 For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you will not be sluggish

Works don’t save us, make us right with God etc, but when we realize the FULL ASSURANCE of our hope as guaranteed it motivates us to serve in love.

[Hebrews 6:12 contd], but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

What are we promised? Fullness in Christ. Salvation. These people needed an anchor – and so do we.

[Hebrews 6:13-14] 13 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.”

Why would God make a promise to God? Who promised to Keep the Commandments and what happened when they didn’t keep their end of the deal?

God promised Himself so we’d have an anchor by two unchangeable things!

[Hebrews 6:15-16] 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute.

Fear of Losing salvation always begins with “what if I”. Do you see who that makes the promise between. Read [Phil 1:6][Heb 13:5][2 Tim 2:13]

[Hebrews 6:17-18] 17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose,  interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,

What’re the 2nd unchangeable things, I only see one? That’s both of Them. God can’t lie, and God can’t lie.

[Hebrews 6:18-20] we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Again – by the standard of the law you must be from the tribe of Levi. Thus disqualifying Jesus. with a change of Priesthood, there must be a change of law.

Closing Thought: Our religious egos don’t like the idea that IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU. It’s a promise God made to God. This covenant is not like the old. Your role? Believe and inherit the FREE GIFT

[2 Cor 5:21] He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Righteous by FAITH, not less sinning
