A biblical teaching of Romans 5 –  Bible Study Questions in Romans 5:1-21

In Romans Chapter 5 We Will See:

+ God is NOT angry with Christians
+ He has no wrath with who we are as believers or our sins
+ We are standing in Grace. An ABUNDANCE of GRACE.

We will also see a competition comparing the work of Adam and the work of Jesus. That through Adams ONE sin he caused all kinds of trouble for all of mankind, and that Jesus had a solution that was much greater! In other words, we will see Jesus is greater than Adam, and nothing Adam did is going to outdo what Jesus did for us!

Romans 5 Bible Study[Romans 5:1] Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

How often do we hear that God is bringing wrath on us for our sins, or we are out of fellowship, or that got to get closer? But here we are told we have PEACE with God. Why? Because Jesus paid for our sin IN FULL. We ARE justified.  It’s not progressive – but rather it’s is finished, and this is why we have peace.

[Romans 5:2] 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

The image of “standing in it” describes grace is everywhere around us. You cant get out of it. You are standing in it.

[Romans 5:3-5] 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

So Not only does God love us, but where is His Love placed at? In OUR HEARTS.

This love is what is IN you. You ARE new at your Spiritual core. This is why we Don’t need the law as believers – we need the love of God in our hearts.

[Romans 5:6-8] 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man;  though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Do you think of God as a person or just a feeling? Sometimes we say “I don’t feel God in my life” but we should understand that God is NOT a feeling, He is a person. He is there rather you FEEL it or not. He never leaves or forsakes you.

[Romans 5:9] 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

Have we been justified, or are we going to be justified? This says we “have been”, past tense. Done. This means God did not give you a disease, or cause you to get a flat tire because you sinned. You are NOT subject to God’s wrath when you sin – but rather you have BEEN SAVED FROM HIS WRATH. Yes, God does guide us, and teach us, but in a loving way. It other words he will not punish you for sins, and we should not consider God teaching us as God “getting us back”.

[Romans 5:10] 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

What does this tell you that the cross did for us? (reconciled)

Are we going to be reconciled or have we been reconciled? Verse 10 again spoke in past tense by saying you WERE RECONCILED.

You are not being reconciled. Not going to be reconciled. You are reconciled. We have peace.  We are one in Christ.

[Romans 5:11] 11 And not only this,  but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Again we see we have ALREADY received reconciliation. I’m not getting Close to God. I’m not “going” to be close. I am close right now.

[Romans 5:12] 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—

So we might say it’s not fair that one man sins infect us all. But consider the answers to these questions:

When Jesus Died, did we believers die with him?

When Jesus was raised were we raised with him?

By His life, death, blood, and resurrection were we forgiven of sins and given life?

You could safely say “I wasn’t there”. But you weren’t there with Adam either. Take the gift. Believe you are totally cleansed. Just as Adam killed you, Jesus saved you. Your behavior, while important, is NOT the solution for peace with God. Only Jesus is. Is was not that saved you – it was life.

[Romans 5:13] 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

This passage teaches us that absolutely sin existed BEFORE the law. The law does not solve our sin problem. It tells us we have a problem.

[Romans 5:14-15] 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a  type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

This passage is saying that one man who was just a HUMAN caused the whole world to suffer. HOW MUCH MORE does the SON OF GOD solve this problem?

Many Christians have no problem saying we are all sinners because of Adam, but tell them we are TOTALLY forgiven, holy, justified, at peace, and always in fellowship because of Jesus you might get a debate. The fact is God successfully solved the problem that man-caused.

[Romans 5:16] 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.

One Mans sin was inherited by EVERYONE, and it caused death. The Gift is only for those that believe and receive it, and it gives us life!

[Romans 5:17] 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

So who gets this benefit? Those who receive, by faith. It’s a gift. We can receive it or reject it.

What was the free gift? RIGHTEOUSNESS. So does that mean we are righteous? Yes. Do we lose it when we sin? NO. Why? Because it’s not about us (old covenant system), it’s about Him (new covenant).

[Romans 5:18] 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.

We are JUSTIFIED. We have LIFE. Who wins the competition, Adam or Jesus? Clearly, Jesus wins.

[Romans 5:19-20] 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. 20  The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,

How many would be quick to yell HYPER GRACE at this? This tells us that when we push law on people we actually cause them to sin more, not less.

Then we learn that where sin increased GRACE abounded all the more.

[Romans 5:21] 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus wins. You are standing in more grace than you can ever imagine. As it applies to your salvation, righteousness, and justification, it’s zero you and zero your behavior and 100% Jesus and His grace.
