Hebrews 12 Bible Study โ€“ (Watch)

In Hebrews 12 we are going to see the word scourge. Does God scourge those He loves? Today we see the scourging is a loving act, and it’s not a punishment.ย It’s a matter of God inquiring deeply into those whom He loves.ย

HEBREWS 12

12ย Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us alsoย lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let usย run withย endurance the race that is set before us,ย 2ย fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3ย Forย consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow wearyย [c]and lose heart.

A Fatherโ€™s Discipline

4ย You have not yet resistedย to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;ย 5ย and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

โ€œMy son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
Norย faint when you are reproved by Him;
6ย For thoseย whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.โ€

7ย It is for discipline that you endure;ย God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whomย hisย father does not discipline?ย 8ย But if you are without discipline,ย of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.ย 9ย Furthermore, we hadย earthly fathers to discipline us, and weย respected them; shall we not much rather be subject toย the Father ofย spirits, andย live?ย 10ย For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but Heย disciplines usย forย ourย good,ย so that we may share His holiness.ย 11ย All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

12ย Therefore,ย strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble,ย 13ย andย make straight paths for your feet, so thatย the limbย which is lame may not be put out of joint, but ratherย be healed.

14ย Pursue peace with all men, and theย sanctification without which no one willย see the Lord.ย 15ย See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it, many are defiled;ย 16ย thatย there beย noย immoral orย godless person like Esau,ย who sold his own birthright for aย singleย meal.ย 17ย For you know that even afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

Contrast of Sinai and Zion

18ย For you have not come toย a mountainย that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind,ย 19ย and to theย blast of a trumpet and theย sound of words whichย sound was such thatย those who heardย begged that no further word be spoken to them.ย 20ย For they could not bear the command, โ€œIf even a beast touches the mountain, it will be stoned.โ€ย 21ย And so terrible was the sight,ย thatย Moses said, โ€œIย am full of fearย and trembling.โ€ย 22ย Butย you have come to Mount Zion and toย the city ofย the living God,ย the heavenly Jerusalem, and toย myriads ofย angels,ย 23ย to the general assembly andย church of the firstborn whoย are enrolled in heaven, and to God,ย the Judge of all, and to theย spirits ofย theย righteous made perfect,ย 24ย and to Jesus, theย mediator of a new covenant, and to theย sprinkled blood, which speaks better thanย the bloodย of Abel.

The Unshaken Kingdom

25ย See to it that you do not refuse Him who isย speaking. Forย if those did not escape when theyย refused him whoย warnedย themย on earth,ย [i]much lessย willย weย escapeย who turn away from Him whoย warnsย from heaven.26ย Andย His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, โ€œYet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.โ€27ย Thisย expression, โ€œYet once more,โ€ denotesย the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.ย 28ย Therefore, since we receive aย kingdom which cannot be shaken, let usย show gratitude, by which we mayย offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;ย 29ย forย our God is a consuming fire.
