Do We Prove We Love God By Keeping The Law? John 14:15 Explained
Welcome back to Jesus Without Religion, I’m Mike Cynar, your host. Today we’re going to be talking about Commandments, and how keeping them proves that you love God. But there’s a little twist. You might think we’re going to be talking about the 10 Commandments. But today you’re going to discover that that’s not the commandments that Jesus was talking about. The commandments he was talking about, or to believe in him, and love others. Let’s dive right in.
“If You Love Me, You Will Keep My Commandments” – John 14:15 ✝️💖
This is one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible. 😬
So many church leaders use it as a weapon —
“If you’re a Christian and still messing up, that just proves you don’t really love God.”
But let’s slow down 🛑 and look at what Jesus is actually saying.
They assume this verse means “If you love God, you’ll keep the law.”
But even if we rewind one chapter in John, there’s ZERO mention of the law. 🤔
Why would Jesus suddenly shift gears, when the rest of scripture says things like:
📖 Romans 10:4 – “Christ is the END of the law for all who believe.”
📖 2 Corinthians 3:7-9 – “The law is a ministry of condemnation and DEATH.” 💀
📖 Romans 3:20 – “Through the law, NO ONE will be declared righteous.”
📖 Romans 6:14 – “You are NOT under law, but under grace.” 🙌
So what commands is Jesus really talking about?
Simple. ✨
Just read on — Jesus tells us directly, in the same letter.
He says it one chapter earlier, and then reinforces it one chapter later:
💬 John 15:12 – “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” ❤️
💬 John 13:34 – “A new command I give you: Love one another.” 🤝
Notice the word “new.” 🆕
This isn’t the OLD COVENANT law of Moses being expanded.
It’s something brand new. Jesus replaced the long list of old laws with two beautiful, life-giving commands:
1️⃣ Believe in Jesus 🙏
2️⃣ Love one another 💞
And just in case you need the receipts… 🧾
💬 1 John 3:23 – “And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us.”
Now, don’t get it twisted. 😅
We’re not saying to go lie, cheat, or steal. ❌
Of course not. Anyone suggesting that would be foolish.
But the proof of your love for God isn’t in sin-avoidance…
It’s in faith and love. 💕
Be careful with people who claim the way to prove your love is by “law keeping.”
They’re literally taking Jesus’ words about faith and love ❤️ and twisting them into law keeping 📜…
…the very law you’re no longer under, the one that ended in Christ,
…the one that was a ministry of condemnation and death. ⚰️
The gospel is about faith and love. 🙌
It really is that simple:
✅ Believe He is who He says He is ✝️
✅ Love each other 💖
That’s the gospel. ✨
So, if you want to prove your love for God,
you won’t do it by keeping the Mosaic law.
You’ll do it by believing in Jesus and loving others as He loves us. 💕

Mike Cynar was raised in a church setting where he frequently noticed that many attendees would eventually drift away. The church labeled these individuals as ‘back sliders’ or ‘fake Christians’ just looking for ‘fire insurance’. However, Mike realized the issue was rarely with these individuals but instead with the church’s message itself. The teachings heavily emphasized behavior improvement and one’s flaws, with only a fleeting mention of one’s identity in Christ. It felt as though every sermon was tailored to the church of Corinth, who as we know or committing sins that even unbelievers don’t partake in. This trend was noticeable not just in one denomination, but across Baptist, Catholic, Pentecostal, and many other churches. Upon understanding the true essence of the gospel – that our righteousness comes from Jesus’ actions, not our own – Mike was inspired to liberate believers from lifeless sermons and reconnect them with the genuine teachings of Jesus. He believes that one can nurture a vibrant and growing bond with Jesus, unhindered by rigid religious practices. And thus, “Jesus Without Religion” was born.
It turns out that it is grace that leads to repentance. And if our heart is to get others to walk in the Spirit and live a godly life, then the best approach is not a beat down sermon, but rather to remind other that it is only when we understand our true identity in Christ that we will live it out. Yes, it’s true, if you’re convinced that God thinks you’re a dirty sinner, you will ultimately continue a lifestyle that mirrors that view, but if you truly believe that even on your worst day, you are called holy, sanctified, justified, and will be presented blameless in the end, well, it turns out this is the secret to living out on the outside what has been worked in to the inside.
